Facilities

At Peter & Karen Bowen racing, horse health is paramount to performance. Investments such as the equine spa have given some excellent results in the yard but as Peter explains they are methodical in the way they use such devices. “If we spend money on something, I like to ensure that my staff has every knowledge on how to apply and use them correctly. It’s no use sitting in the corner of the tack room.”  Peter Bowen.

Equine Spa
Bought last year the Equine Spa bought from Ean Branston has been instrumental in McKelvey’s recovery. They’ve even built a special covered barn for the spa.

MicroVet (click here to visit the MicroVet website)
The MicroVet is an affordable easy to use device which has been proven to heal tendon problems in racehorses. Used hugely in the sports world with great success, it has recently been adapted and used on racehorses with equally good results. McKelvey began his therapy on the MicroVet three days following breaking down at the Grand National this year.
12 weeks on, he has already returned to work and Peter believes that the MicroVet has been a massive contribution to the horse’s improvement. “It’s amazing how he has improved in such a short period of time, the scans are showing excellent lineage and healing we are really pleased.”

Feed
Even the hay that they feed is shipped from Canada, the horses are fed the best quality hay and at £14 a bale. Peter feeds Spillers with lots of herbs as recommended by iridologist Ellen Collinson. Karen Bowen explains how two horses being on the liver herbs in just two weeks have changed completely. “We tried everything from gastro guard to yeast and nothing seemed to be doing the trick, we decided to give the herbs a go as Ellen had picked up a liver malfunction in their irises and the two horse’s look and feel the best they ever have.”

Leg Saver
This acupuncture machine is regularly used to suppress all types of ailments in the horse. Emma Rees who regularly applies it to the horses explains that it’s excellent for tying up and all sorts of problems.

Equissage
Peter and Karen regularly use the equissage on their horses.

Proctor Fan
The picture may look like nothing too significant and whilst walking through the yard, one may not notice the plastic tube linked at the top of every stable, but Peter firmly believes that the proctor fan has is solely responsible for eliminating viruses in a yard. “Horses create stale air and keeping dust to a minimum is always a large factor in this yard. I came across this simple design a few years ago. It’s designed for calves to prevent them from pneumonia and the farmers swear by it so I decided to give it a go with the horses and it’s worked a treat.”
